*Department of Pharmacology Celebrates a New Research Achievement: Dr. Salem Almujri Granted a Patent for Developing an Innovative Tuberculosis Vaccine*
In a new research achievement for the accomplishments of the Department of Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy, King Khalid University ,Dr. Salem bin Salman Almujri, a faculty member in the Department, has been granted an official patent by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) for his invention entitled “Modified Subunit Vaccine for Tuberculosis.”
The Department of Pharmacology extends its sincere congratulations to Dr. Salem Almujri on this achievement, which reflects the research excellence and innovative contributions of the Department’s faculty members and contributes to strengthening the position of the College and the University in the field of vaccine development and the prevention of infectious diseases.
The invention involves the development of an innovative DNA vaccine for the prevention of tuberculosis (TB) based on a genetically modified antigen derived from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The gene was modified using genetic engineering techniques to enhance antigen production within mammalian cells and stimulate the immune response.
The developed vaccine is also characterized by stability at room temperature, which may reduce cold-chain requirements for vaccine storage and transportation. In addition, it does not contain live bacteria, has the potential for lower production costs, and can be manufactured on a large scale. These characteristics represent potential advantages compared with the current BCG vaccine, particularly in supporting the development of vaccination options for certain populations for whom live vaccines may not be suitable.
Initial testing in animal models demonstrated promising immune and protective responses, supporting the continued development of the vaccine and further studies to evaluate its safety and efficacy, with a view toward its potential future applications.
The Department of Pharmacology takes great pride in this distinguished scientific achievement by Dr. Almujri , which reflects the University’s commitment to supporting impactful research and innovation aimed at addressing global health challenges. The Department wishes him continued success and further scientific and research achievements.
